East Berlin was an unsettling place to visit
for a group of young design students.
The wall, daubed with graffiti – messages for members of divided families.
Images of haunted people.
The bomb-scarred buildings on every corner – relics from world war two –
were constant reminders of decades of neglect and stagnation. Superstores with
half empty shelves, containing only dull, anonymous brown paper packaging instead
of the bright printing and shiny plastic of the Western side. A desolate, decaying
Olympic Stadium with only the image of Jesse Owens in my head to give it life
