For me, the scale and details of the Lake District hold an intense fascination. The quality of light can change swiftly, turning soft, picture postcard hills into contours full of dark, oppressive tone. Also, we concentrate on the vista, only to miss the drama of light and shade on a smaller scale; around our feet and in the middle distance.

We had avoided visiting The Lakes in the past for fear of vast numbers of people (tourists, like us) cluttering many popular areas and literally ‘spoiling the view’. Whilst this was true of the larger towns and villages of the southern lakes used as bases for the many serious walkers visiting the area, the relative isolation of the lakes and high passes in the North resonated only to the echoes of our voices.
